California Community Colleges Common Assessment InitiativeWith advice from its Test Development Process Work Group, the California Community Colleges (CCC) Common Assessment Initiative (CAI) Steering Committee has shifted the rollout timeline for the Common Assessment System.

What was originally scheduled as a phased release in Spring 2016 for Fall 2016 student placement will now be released in Fall 2016 for Spring 2017 student placement.

“This change will allow for additional time devoted to piloting, validation and approval of the test, ensuring the highest quality product available to faculty and their colleges,” said Kitty Moriwaki, president of the CCC Assessment Association and a member of the CAI Steering Committee and work groups.

In addition, watch for opportunities to provide feedback on the Assessment Competency Maps through targeted engagement sessions. These competency maps in English, Math and ESL will continue to be refined as blueprints and test specifications are developed. This will lead to test-item development and modification of existing items, including some currently being used locally within the system.

Following is the revised timeline for piloting, validation and release. Note the recursive nature of the process:

    • Item testing/piloting

  • Fall 2015
    • Item revision
    • Item development
    • Item testing/piloting
    • Multiple Measures piloting–non-cognitive variables
    • Professional development workshops, best practice gathering/sharing

  • Spring 2016
    • Field testing
    • Item revision
    • Platform/technology piloting
    • Approval of Common Assessment by CCC Chancellor’s Office Assessment Standards Work Group
    • Professional development workshops, best practice gathering/sharing

  • Summer 2016
    • Professional development workshops

  • Fall 2016
    • Begin phased release of Common Assessment beyond pilot colleges

  • Spring 2017
    • Begin student placement based on Common Assessment results
