California Community Colleges Online Education InitiativeThe California Community Colleges (CCC) Online Education Initiative (OEI) reports a positive start to communication and collaboration with the 24 pilot colleges, and a smooth transition to new Steering Committee leadership.


19 Courses Considered For Pilot Phase

The OEI Steering Committee has identified 19 potential courses to be offered during its pilot implementation phase. The courses will be used to focus the pilot of the OEI Online Tutoring and Student Readiness modules expected to begin in Spring 2015. The courses will also be the focus of the Full Launch pilot and are expected to be offered in a Common Course Management System beginning in Summer 2015.

The courses were recommended based on the CCC C-ID Course Identification Numbering System. Any community college course bearing the C-ID has been determined by intersegmental faculty to meet the published course content, rigor and course objectives. C-ID also provides a common numbering system to improve curricular consistency for courses throughout the state, regardless of local course numbering systems.

Other criteria for the recommended courses included that they were high-demand Associate in Arts Degree for Transfer (AA-T) or Associate in Science Degree for Transfer (AS-T) courses.

Pilot Colleges Show Eagerness, Excitement

In other OEI news, Chief Academic Officer Jory Hadsell said initial interactions with the eight Online Tutoring Pilot Colleges in this group show great promise. Some of the colleges have already assembled teams composed of local tutoring and/or learning center staff, education technologists, faculty members and deans.

“I am very impressed by the level of interest moving forward with the spring pilot of online tutoring,” Hadsell said. “It is clear to me that colleges are ready to join together and support one another in offering better access to high quality online courses for our students.”

Chief Student Services Officer Bonnie Peters voiced similar sentiments regarding her communications with the eight Online Readiness Pilot Colleges as they begin the work of producing modules that will support students as they take courses. The goal is to offer students all the support they need to be successful.

“Everyone is very excited about working on this initiative,” Peters said. “The pilot schools are bringing together the relevant people from their campuses to discuss readiness and how it will be implemented. They are very receptive to what we are doing and are looking to be very collaborative. Everyone is eager to get going.”

New Steering Committee Chair, Vice Chair Approved

Stategic Planning and Operations Director John Makevich is starting to make inroads with the collaboration and communication efforts in the Full Launch pilot group. Makevich was also pleased to announce that Fabiola Torres was elected to replace him as Steering Committee Chair, and the transition has been smooth. Torres is professor of Ethnic Studies at Glendale Community College. John Freitas was voted in as Vice Chair of the OEI Steering Committee, replacing Torres in that role. Freitas is professor of Chemistry at Los Angeles City College and senate president, Area C representative, for the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges.

“I could not think of two more qualified people to take on these roles,” Makevich said. “We are very fortunate to have this kind of leadership moving us forward.”
