Participants represented IT, faculty, research, counseling, administration and assessment center staff.

The conference, held Oct. 9 in Oakland, gave attendees an opportunity to learn more about the statewide common assessment being developed by the California Community Colleges (CCC) Common Assessment Initiative (CAI), according to CCCAAA President Eric Hoiland, Director of Assessment, Regional Testing Center, Butte-Glenn Community College District.

Attendees See First Demonstration

“For the most part, people were aware of the CAI as well as multiple measures,” Hoiland said. “During our CCCAA meeting, they gained details about the test itself, the technology being used and recent research on multiple measures.”

“Attendees were excited about the potential of a statewide common assessment,” Hoiland added. “They were eager to get more details about how it is really going to work. Seeing the first demonstration of the user interface gave them a concrete idea of what is being developed.” After the demonstration of the user interface developed by Unicon in collaboration with the CAI team, conference attendees were able to ask questions and provide feedback.

Colleges Piloting The Assessment

Attendees at the CCCAA 2015 Fall ConferenceThere are 12 colleges that will be piloting the “Minimal Viable Product” or streamlined version of CCCAssess in the spring semester of 2016 explained Jennifer Coleman, CAI Statewide Program Director.

“Based on what we learn from the field during the pilot phase, the assessment tool and support materials will be enhanced,” Coleman said. “Pilot schools will be giving input on the campus implementation process, professional development, best practices, reaching out to students and integrating with various student services portal systems.”

Colleges Can Plan Ahead

Hoiland explained that the CCCAA conference provided an excellent opportunity for colleges that aren’t piloting CCCAssess to find out more about the assessment instrument and rollout.

“For many college representatives, the conference gave them a framework to start talking about CCCAssess at their campuses,” Hoiland said. “They were eager to learn what they can start doing now, especially those representing colleges that are currently using the Compass assessment tool. These colleges have one year to prepare for CCCAssess. The best thing they can do is assemble a team representing all the departments involved in assessment – faculty, counseling, research, IT, administrators and the assessment center staff – and start meeting regularly to prepare for the roll out.”

They can find information on http://cccassess.org/ and we will be adding new materials,” she said.

Coleman also announced that she is scheduled to make presentations at campuses across the state in the coming year. She told the group that the CAI Professional Development Work Group is currently filming a short video that will provide more information about the implementation of the CCCAssess tool.

Next CCCAA Conference Scheduled For March

According to Hoiland, the next CCC Assessment Association conference will be held in March in the southern part of the state. Watch for details at http://cccaa-info.org/.
